Getting Started

How do I set up my device for video recording?

← All help documentation

Before You Record

  1. Use one of the supported device and browser combinations listed in LingoLesson supported devices, browsers, and operating systems.
  2. Connect your webcam and microphone before opening the lesson. Built-in cameras usually work, but an external webcam may give better video quality.
  3. Make sure the camera is not covered by a privacy shutter, case, tape, or another object.
  4. Make sure your microphone is not muted, because video recordings in LingoLesson also need audio.
  5. Close other apps that may already be using the camera or microphone, such as video meeting apps, camera apps, or screen recording tools.
  6. Start the LingoLesson video recording activity and allow camera and microphone access when your browser asks.

Allow Camera and Microphone Permission by Device and Browser

iOS or iPadOS: Safari

  1. Open LingoLesson directly in Safari.
  2. Start the video recording activity.
  3. When Safari asks to use the camera and microphone, tap Allow.
  4. If you previously blocked access, open the site controls or Website Settings for LingoLesson in Safari and set Camera and Microphone to Allow or Ask.
  5. If the prompt still does not appear, open the device Settings app, find Safari, and make sure website camera and microphone access are set to Ask or Allow.

Android: Chrome

  1. Open LingoLesson directly in Chrome.
  2. Start the video recording activity.
  3. When Chrome asks to use the camera and microphone, tap Allow.
  4. If LingoLesson is blocked, open Chrome settings, go to Site settings, choose Camera and Microphone, and allow LingoLesson.
  5. If Android itself has blocked Chrome, open Android app permissions for Chrome and allow camera and microphone access.

Windows: Chrome, Firefox, or Edge

  1. Connect and select your webcam and microphone in Windows settings if you use external devices.
  2. Open LingoLesson in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  3. Start the video recording activity and choose Allow when the browser asks for camera and microphone permission.
  4. If access was blocked, use the permission icon in the address bar or the browser's site settings to change camera and microphone access for LingoLesson to Allow.
  5. If Windows blocks the browser, open Windows privacy settings for Camera and Microphone and allow access for desktop apps.

macOS: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari

  1. Connect and select your webcam and microphone in macOS settings if you use external devices.
  2. Open LingoLesson in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
  3. Start the video recording activity and choose Allow when the browser asks for camera and microphone permission.
  4. If access was blocked in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, use the permission icon in the address bar or the browser's site settings to allow camera and microphone access for LingoLesson.
  5. If access was blocked in Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Websites, then set LingoLesson to Allow or Ask for both Camera and Microphone.
  6. If macOS blocks the browser, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, then allow the browser under both Camera and Microphone.

Troubleshooting Video Recording

  • If the browser never asks for permission, check whether camera or microphone access is blocked in the browser's site settings or in the operating system privacy settings.
  • If the camera preview is black, remove any camera cover, check lighting, close other camera apps, and refresh the LingoLesson page.
  • If the wrong camera is used, choose the correct camera in the browser or operating system settings, then refresh LingoLesson and try again.
  • If the video records without sound, check the microphone setup steps in How do I set up my device for audio recording?.
  • If the camera works in another app but not in LingoLesson, check browser site permissions, privacy extensions, content blockers, antivirus browser protection, and managed device restrictions.
  • If recording is choppy or fails to save, close other tabs and apps, move to a stronger internet connection, and avoid low-battery Bluetooth accessories.
  • If you opened LingoLesson from an email app, QR code reader, learning platform frame, or social media app, copy the link and open it directly in the supported browser instead.
  • If your device is managed by a school or workplace, an administrator may need to allow browser camera and microphone access.
