How do I migrate content from ZenGengo?

If You Do Not Have a Course Yet

1. In ZenGengo, create or choose the assignments you want to migrate.
2. Group related assignments into lessons. ZenGengo's How do I create lessons? article explains that workflow.
3. Create a course, then add the lessons you want to move into that course. ZenGengo's How do I create courses? article shows the course setup steps.
4. Review the course in ZenGengo to confirm it contains all of the lessons and assignments you want in LingoLesson.
5. Export that course using the migration steps below.

Export From ZenGengo

1. Sign in to ZenGengo.
2. Open the user menu in the top-right corner.
3. Choose Account.
4. Scroll to Migrate Courses.
5. Choose the course you want to move from the Course dropdown.
6. Select Migrate. ZenGengo downloads a JSON file for that course.
7. Repeat these steps for each ZenGengo course you want to move.

Import Into LingoLesson

1. Sign in to LingoLesson with a teacher account.
2. Open your teacher account settings and choose Migration.
3. Under Migrate from ZenGengo, choose the JSON file you downloaded from ZenGengo.
4. Confirm the course name and lesson count shown by LingoLesson.
5. Select Start to create a new LingoLesson course and import each lesson.
6. When the import finishes, select Open Course to review the migrated lessons.

What Migrates

• The importer creates a new LingoLesson course using the course name from the ZenGengo export.
• Lessons in the export are imported into that course.
• Common ZenGengo activity types are converted into LingoLesson lesson items, including multiple choice, vocabulary tests, cloze activities, text-to-test, read aloud, essay, audio response, and video response activities.
• Supported media prompts, including images, audio, video, PDFs, embeds, and YouTube links, are added where possible.

After Importing

1. Open each migrated lesson and check the instructions, media, answers, and recording settings.
2. Replace or re-upload any media that did not copy from ZenGengo.
3. Edit any activity that needs adjustment in the LingoLesson lesson editor.
4. Assign the imported course to a class when it is ready for students.
5. Invite students to the LingoLesson class. Student accounts and enrollments are created in LingoLesson, not copied from ZenGengo.

Warnings and Retry

• If a lesson imports with warnings, LingoLesson stops the import and shows an import warning report.
• Warnings usually mean an item was skipped, an activity type was unsupported or empty, or a media file could not be copied.
• Use Retry to continue importing the remaining lessons after reviewing the warning report. Completed lessons are not imported again.
• If the import fails because the file is invalid, choose the original ZenGengo JSON export again.

Troubleshooting

• If LingoLesson says the JSON does not contain any lessons, confirm that you exported a full ZenGengo course rather than a different file.
• If the course has more lessons than your current account limit allows, split the source material into smaller courses before importing.
• If you have reached the maximum number of courses, delete unused courses or contact support before trying again.
• If a migrated lesson looks different from the ZenGengo version, edit the imported LingoLesson item directly and save the lesson.
